Dear Parent, (s) Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much ~ Helen Keller We, at Suncity believe that the purpose of education is the integral development of a person which helps us in leading a fuller and better life. Education also contributes to the betterment of a society as a whole. The children of today can make a huge difference in the society tomorrow. Children do learn what they live. Then they grow up to live what they've learned ~ Dorothy Law Nolte Transition is one of the most inevitable and natural parts of life. As our youngest lot prepare to move to the next class, it is very important to remind our little ones of their previous knowledge. Here is a brief of the plethora of activities which helped our children recapitulate their learning. Let's take a sneak peek into the fabulous month of February and marvellous month of March. Theme – Community helpers Teacher, Teacher, what do you do? I teach reading and writing too. Doctor, Doctor, what do you do? I help when you're sick with a cold or the flu Police officer, what do you do? I help you stay safe in all that you do. The theme for the month of February was ‘Community Helpers’ and the children were sensitised on the importance of community helpers in our lives. Community helpers play a very important role in keeping the community safe and healthy. The educator introduced various community helpers such as doctor, nurse, teacher, policeman, cobbler etc. and discussed the job performed by them to ensure that the community functions more productively. The children were also made aware of the tools and instruments used by various community helpers and they enthusiastically discussed the chores done by various community helpers. Universal Value – 'I am Hopeful' May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears ~ Nelson Mandela We aim to inculcate the values in our young learners which will help them become better human beings of tomorrow. Good moral values help build a child's character, form the very core of their being and become a foundation of their moral beliefs. The value for the month of February was 'I am Hopeful'. Hope is what gives us the courage to look forward to a better tomorrow. The educator presented the video 'Hope, the boat' and discussed the important value of always being hopeful. This was followed by an activity, 'Flicker of Hope' and the children were encouraged to express their feelings and represent their thoughts on the flicker through simple drawings. Verbal Linguistic Linguistic skills measure the capacity of individuals to understand and express themselves, both in written and oral form. Our little ones narrated stories with great confidence and aplomb. It was enthralling to see this kind of enthusiasm at such an early age. The children enjoyed reciting rhymes like 'Wind the bobbin' up, 'Chop chop', and 'Cobbler, cobbler mend my Shoe'. They loved listening to the stories 'Peppa Pig – when I grow up' and 'Elves and the Shoemaker'. The children also learnt the phonic sound and words related to the letter ‘Zz’ and recapitulated letters from “Aa to Zz” through audio-visuals, stories, real objects and practice sheets. Recapitulation of letters 'Kk' to 'Zz' along with their phonic sounds and related words was done in the class. The children enjoyed enacting a role play in the class and singing rhymes like 'Mr. Sun', 'It's raining, it's pouring', 'Itsy Bitsy Spider', 'Old MacDonald had a farm', and 'Wheels of the bus'. Our little ones have become confident orators and narrate story with the help of picture books with enthusiasm and confidence. Logical Mathematics Our little ones have become active thinkers and have begun to use imagery as part of their thinking. They have begun to relate numbers with the things around them. The little ones learnt to recognize number 10. The colour 'Black' was introduced through a wide range of concrete objects. The children enjoyed recapitulating numbers from 1 – 9, orally counted from 1 to 20 through songs and by tracing the 'Loop' pattern. They attempted an array of fun activities like making a human face using different shapes and picture tracing. The children recapitulated the pre-number concepts - 'Big/ Small' and 'Tall/ Short'. They also revised oral counting from 1 to 20, colours - 'Red' and 'Yellow' and shapes - square, rectangle and triangle. Naturalistic Our young learners were sensitised towards the role of community helpers in their lives. They understood the importance of work done by the community helpers and the value of being thankful to them was emphasised through a video demonstration. They were delighted to become chefs for a day and proudly displayed a dish prepared by them and confidently shared the ingredients and utensils used in preparing their dish. Making a 'Thank You' card was indeed an apt way of expressing gratitude towards our community helpers. It is the need of the hour to sensitize the little ones to be responsible towards the environment and the planet. The same was reiterated through a video on sustainable development which was watched with rapt attention by our young Suncitizens. Our budding environmentalists enjoyed making their own 'Watering can' and painting it beautifully. The little ones were also sensitised to the fact that they are growing up and would be promoted to a new class very soon. The educator encouraged the children to express their feelings on the same. Visual Spatial Creativity is expressing one’s own idea, trying new things, and experimenting with changing materials. The children celebrated the onset of spring by making a beautiful ‘Vasant Panchami Card’ and dedicating it to Goddess Saraswati. Drama Drama and skits are already part of children’s lives even before they start their school in the form of fictional plays at home such as doctors, nurses, pilots, engineers, dentists and more. This allows them to create their own identity by creating situations that have many similarities in the real world. Keeping this in mind, the educator performed various activities in this month.
