Greetings! “Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.” ~ William Arthur Ward Children are born with curiosity and to encourage this curiosity in their learning process, we need to take significant steps in order to lay the foundation for their successful educational journey. Therefore we, at Suncity, believe that it is important to arouse curiosity in our little ones so that the learning never ceases. That is the very reason, our activities are designed to make children eager to know, what is coming next. Let's take a sneak peek into the splendid month of July. Theme-Summer Season The school premises echoed with the joyous voices of our little ones, after a long summer break. Summer, though the hottest season of the year, yet was very interesting and entertaining for our kids because they got a chance to enjoy the ‘Water Play’. Children discovered the fact that in the middle of the day, sun rays are very hot. Children were briefed about the availability of summer season fruits like mangoes, plums, litchee, muskmelon, watermelon, cherries etc. in abundance. The knowledge bank of children was enriched with the following details about summer season. We should wear comfortable cotton clothes, sunglasses and a hat to protect ourselves from heat. We should eat and drink cool things to fight against the scorching heat. We should not waste water and electricity. We should plant more trees in our surrounding areas and water them on a daily basis to reduce the summer heat. Verbal Linguistic Early language acquisition is instinctive and for most children tends to happen quite naturally but how we as adults respond to the children’s attempts to communicate can have an impact—accelerating or decelerating their language development. So, we ensure that we interact in complete sentences with them and in soft voices. We recite theme related rhymes, narrated stories, encouraged them to speak during Quality Circle Time. Children practiced the phonic songs and words related to letters from ‘a to j’ through the ways mentioned above. We recited theme-related rhymes like ‘Summertime’, ‘Garmi Aayi’, ‘Wind the Bobbin Up’. ‘Little bunny went on a holiday’ and ‘Drippy the Raindrop’ were a few stories which were narrated during the month. They expanded their vocabulary through the audiovisuals, stories, real objects, practice sheets. Logical/Mathematical ‘The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. Mathematics gives us hope, that every problem has a solution.’ Children made an effort to solve problems. They played and interacted with the people and objects around them. They not only acquired knowledge about their body, but also got acquainted with the concepts like tall and short, shapes, numbers and their quantification till number 3. Visual-Spatial Children feel good while they are creating art. Our young artists attempted a variety of activities to boost their imagination such as painting a slice of watermelon, making an ice cream cone craft. The little ones enjoyed creating a ‘Frog Craft’ and ‘Grape Craft’ integrated with verbal linguistic intelligence. The best example of an integrated approach was evident in the activities like making slanting line/rays of sun craft and creating impressions of square shape on the sheet. Indeed, we could see them inventing ways and thinking differently while experimenting with colours. Naturalistic Our little nurturers were sensitized towards the need of keeping the environment clean. They learnt to take care of the birds and animals by giving them water in summer. Children explored the sense of smell and feel with the help of activities and objects. They understood the importance of saving water through a waterdrop made in clay modelling class. Our explorers loved to go for nature walks to observe the fresh vegetables in the vegetable garden which are essential for their growth. They felt elated while watering the plants of the school garden. Children visited the compost pit to put peels of fruits. They were happy to discover that peels are being re-used to make manure to make plants strong. Musical Intelligence Music is a form of communication that transcends languages. Our children practiced musical stories, voice intonation through English and Hindi songs. It not only expanded their vocabulary but also made them aware of a lot of expressions. Western Music In the month of July our little babies learnt a new song, ‘God’s love it’s so wonderful’. Indian Music This month children practiced the musical story of ‘नटखट चूहा’, ‘Rain song’ along with ‘Sa, re, ga, ma’ body game and vocal warm up. Dance ‘Dance is a language of the emotions.’ Dancing is the best exercise for our body and it keeps our mind healthy and fit. The children strengthened their dancing skills by dancing on the song, ‘I am so happy’. Waterplay Splash, pop! Water play is a unique activity for children which aids in extended learning. It takes more muscle strength to move arms and legs through water then it does through air. Children strengthened muscle coordination and gained confidence to enter into a water body. They were apprised of the essentials related to hygiene and safety and discovered the fact of force by playing around pop-up fountains and strengthened the bond with their friends. Imaginarium Children visited the ‘Imaginarium’ for expanding their horizons of imagination in different corners like supermarket, Lego table, block corner etc. They also acquired hand grip and enjoyed playing the game, ‘Sorting of Fruits and Vegetables’. Bodily kinesthetic Physical development is one domain which relates to changes, growth and skill development of the body, including development of muscles and senses. Our children are rapidly growing, developing and achieving important milestones in the following skills: Running, Kicking, Jumping, Throwing (gross muscles) Striking skills Pottery Put clay into the hands of children and see how it stimulates their imagination and creativity. Our little ones applied their creativity in moulding different clay objects as per their desire such as an ice candy, a fish, a cherry, and a water drop. Montessori Children practiced essential life skills of spooning and wet pouring through the Montessori apparatus. They also developed their fine muscles through the lacing activity. Drama Drama develops creative imagination in children. After the summer vacations, children practiced sounds of various animals. They were thrilled to play the game – ‘Copy Cat’ wherein they enacted the various expressions along with the educator. Storytelling Storytelling promotes brain development and imagination in children. It developes language & emotions, and helps in strenghthening relationships. Keeping this view in mind, ‘Friend’ was the first story narrated this month, which emphasized upon the importance of helping and trusting each other. It was followed by a drawing activity in the second week, in which children made a drawing of two friends and represented their interdependence on each other through their drawings. They enjoyed listening to the story ‘The Foolish Timid Rabbit’ in the third week. This was followed by a ‘Puppet-Making Activity’ in the last week. Birthday celebration A show and tell was conducted on the theme, ‘Summer Season’. Children were briefed about the social etiquettes- the way to stand and greet others. Mannerism, in terms of behaving at a birthday party in different situations, was discussed with children. They were dressed as per the theme and shared their thoughts with their friends while waiting for their turn. Children learnt the etiquettes to behave in a social gathering. Summer Fruit Festival A summer fruit festival was organized to expand the vocabulary and awareness of children about summer fruits in terms of the following: Colour of peel and pulp Seeds of fruits Products made from fruits Each classroom displayed a summer fruit and products made from it. Children visited all the EYP classrooms and tasted an array of fruit products. Special Assembly Spread your wings As it’s time for swings A lot of sweets Dance Beautiful scene Everything in green Lovely monsoon breeze Let’s celebrate Teej on beats To welcome the monsoon season, the energetic students of KG C conducted a special assembly on the auspicious occasion of Teej, with lots of zeal and enthusiasm. Hartalika Teej or Hariyali Teej is a famous festival that commemorates the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Our kindergarten students apprised their friends with the significance of the festival wherein girls and women sing , dance and swing on the swings. The event concluded with a mesmerising dance performance by the students on the song ‘Teej ayi Hariyali’ followed by the National Anthem.
